4th Street vs 6th Street vs Rainey: what's the difference?
Austin's three downtown nightlife districts split cleanly by crowd and price. Dirty 6th is the cheap, rowdy, college-and-bachelorette party strip - dive bars, dollar shots, and street chaos. 318 Colorado St — A moody, retro-futuristic neon cocktail lounge (connected to Coconut Club) - the more intimate, design-forward pick.

307 W 5th St — Austin's most-awarded cocktail bar, in a 1929 warehouse, with a menu organized by cocktail era. The upstairs Mezzanine takes reservations for groups of 12+.

DuMont's Down Low

Good to know: the 200 block of W 4th (Oilcan Harry's, Rain, Coconut Club, Neon Grotto) has a long-discussed redevelopment plan hanging over it. All were open as of mid-2026, but it's worth a quick check before you go.
The easiest way to bar hop 4th Street with a group
The Warehouse District, 6th Street, and Rainey are all within a few downtown blocks - perfect for a party bike crawl. A driver drops your whole crew right in the action, you drink on board between stops, and nobody splits into five Ubers or hunts for parking. It's the stress-free way to hit the best of all three districts in one night.
